Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device Guide

We have all heard about the Blue Screen of Death, and we all fear it a great deal as well. Well, there are a few black screens that can cause one quite the worry as well. To be honest, any screen besides the normal screen is usually a bad news – especially if it does not want to leave you alone even after a reboot.

Among the infamous erroneous screens is a black error screen that reads “Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key”. This error can be quite annoying. In fact, your system can be working perfectly fine and then out of nowhere you might get attacked by the Reboot and select proper device error screen.

We have put this tutorial to try and help out all those who have fallen victim to the Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device error.

Step 1

The first and basic step is to reboot your machine and check whether the issue still remains. Sometimes, just letting the system refresh does the magic. If the issue is fixed, then you might want to restart your machine two to three times to confirm that the issue has been resolved.

If on the other hand, your issue is not resolved, move onto the next step.

Step 2

Since we are back to the basics, here is another basic thing to check out. Check whether all the wires are properly connected. Check the power cables and data cables with much care. It is often seen that the power cable on the hard disk is loosely connected.

After you have checked the connections, reboot and check whether it worked. If you are still stuck with the same error then continue reading.

Step 3

The next thing you should verify is that there are no external drives connected to your system – unless you have deliberately connected and configured your system to boot from it. Also make sure any USB devices are removed unless you are using them to boot. Reboot and check whether issue resolves, otherwise keep on reading.

Step 4

Restart your system and enter the BIOS setup. Check whether your Hard Drive is being detected. If you are trying to boot from your CD/DVD-ROM, then check and verify that it is also being detected.

Once you have confirmed that they are being detected, then next thing is to verify the boot sequence for your attached devices.

If you are trying to boot from your CD/DVD-ROM then make sure that it is set up with the 1st boot priority. Otherwise make sure that your Hard Drive is set as the device with the 1st boot priority. In case you have two or more Hard Drives, make sure that the Hard Drive with your Operating System is set with the 1st boot priority.

Step 5

The above should solve your problem if properly prioritized. It is also often seen that if the floppy-drive is set up among the booting devices (with any priority), you can still get the error. If you are not using it, then make sure that it is disabled from both, the bios devices and the bot priority list.
