If you are here looking for a fix to the problem where your Print Spooler keeps stopping, then you most probably already know what the print spooler service is associated with. Yes, like its name suggests it has to do with printers and their management.
It is basically responsible for sending printing jobs in a buffer and then on to the printer. It enables the computer processor to write multiple printing jobs and can send the jobs over to the printer in the form of a queue. If there are multiple printers, it can distribute the printing jobs among different printers. It also enables the pending jobs to be changed or deleted. Furthermore, it also notifies the user once a printing job has completed successfully.
The service usually works quite sturdily and without any hiccups. In case something does go wrong and it stops working no need to panic. Although if it keeps stopping even after you enable it over and over, then maybe you are allowed to worry a bit. In most cases, this is a result of being a victim of the defender.exe virus.
Step 1
Well, in any case make sure that you scan your system thoroughly for any viruses, spyware or any malware.
Step 2
Once you have scanned and cleaned your system, try running the spooler service and see if it keeps stopping.
Step 3
If the problem persists, try copying working versions of the spoolsv.exe and spoolss.dll files onto your system.
Step 4
While in the Printer folder, click on File> Server Properties / Printer Server properties. Delete all of the drivers listed.
Try deleting all the printers and drivers from the spool folder. Attempt to reinstall the printers and drivers.
Step 5
If the problem does not go away, try adding the spool service to the Data Execeution Exceptions Tab.
Step 6
Go over to the Microsoft website and see if the FixThis program is able to fix the problem for you.
Step 7
Go to the PRINTERS folder at C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and delete any files that you see there. Try restarting the spooler service now and check.
Step 8
This step is a registry fix. So before you make any changes to your registry, make sure you first back up your registry in case anything goes wrong. DO NOT PROCEED WITHOUT FIRST CREATING A REGISTRY BACKUP!
Go to the start menu and click on Run. In the Run window, type regedit.exe. In case of Windows 7, you can just type regedit.exe in the search box.
Navigate to the following registry location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\PRINT\
Delete everything you find there except “LanMan Print Services” and “Internet Print Provider”. These are the default entries. Do not delete anything inside them either.
Close the registry editor and hopefully your problem will
